Project Goals

Goal I: What is the state of SMB lending in SD County?

An infographic trying to give a sense of the overall aspects of SMB lending, as an informative/educational tool so a SMB could have a sense of what to expect. Such as: is a 12% rate good or bad for my business?

  1. What are the average rates small and medium businesses pay for debt?
  2. Can that be broken down by business characteristics, such as amount of debt, size of business, length of history, industry sector?
  3. Can that be broken down by geography?
  4. Can that be broken down by business ownership demographics, such as owner race or gender?
  5. Who are the lenders?

Goal II: SD County by Credit Score

Broken down by some appropriate geography, just as an informative graphic in the same vein as the United States of Credit Scores https://redmine.sandiegodata.org/documents/14.

Goal III: Demographic Aspects of SMB Lending

Connecting the state SMB lending and demographics to see if there are disparities in terms of approval rates vs likelihood to repay that might show credit scores or other traditional underwriting methods are not actually good predictors of success. Hypothetical example: hispanic borrowers in certain areas are denied more often, but actually have higher repayment rates than their white counterparts.

  1. What are the average approval, denial, repayment rates?
  2. Can that be broken down by business charateristics, such as amount of debt, size of business, length of history, industry sector?
  3. Can that be broken down by geography?
  4. Can that be broken down by business ownership demographics, such as owner race or gender?
